Crystal Clear water of the Little Missouri River head waters plunges through a cleavage creating a spectacular 20
foot waterfall during periods of high water. Then, tumbling over a series of natural rock
dams 2 to 4 feet high, intermixed with relatively quiet pools (natural swimming holes)
it continues as a cascade for several hundred more yards.
Note that the water is only high enough for decent viewing in the early spring and after heavy rains.
Little Missouri Falls Trail Description:
This 0.5 mile, out-and-back trail is mostly 'easy' with a few steep grades. Beginning in the Little Missouri Falls Recreation Area, the trail first crosses a native stone dam across the Little Missouri River. The trail then ascends a series of steep steps to the edge of the cliffs overlooking the river. From here you have a great view of the area above the falls. Here, the trail is following the old wagon trail used by the early settlers en route from Langley to Big Fork. A little further, a grand view of Little Missouri Falls comes into view.
Note: Trail Map available from Cado Ranger District (see below).
The Little Missouri Falls Recreation Area is a 'Day Use Area' (no camping permitted). Five picnic tables, drinking water and a vault toilet are available. No fee is charged.
Camping is available at several nearby locations including the Albert Pike
Recreational Area and Daisy State Park - located on the northern end of Lake Greeson just off US Highway 70 near the town of Daisy.
How to get there:
- From US-70, west of Hot Springs, take AR-369 north.
Note: AR-369 is 5 miles west of Daisy and 4 miles east of New Hope.
- Follow AR-369 to the fork with Forest Service Road 73 (about 6 miles).
- Continue north on Forest Service Road 73 to Forest Service Road 43 (about 3 miles).
